How to use have

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present

    We have two kids and a dog.

    A gente tem dois filhos e um cachorro.

  2. Past

    I had a sandwich for lunch today.

    Eu comi um sanduíche no almoço hoje.

  3. Future

    You will have plenty of time tomorrow.

    Você vai ter bastante tempo amanhã.

  4. Present continuous

    They are having dinner with the neighbors.

    Eles estão jantando com os vizinhos.

  5. Present perfect

    She has had that car for ten years.

    Ela tem aquele carro há dez anos.

  6. Conditional

    I would have a coffee, if you're making some.

    Eu tomaria um café, se você for fazer.

  7. Imperative

    Have a seat, the doctor will be right in.

    Sente-se, o médico já vem.

Good to know

  • Com comida e bebida, "have" é comer ou tomar: "have lunch", "have a coffee".
  • Na pergunta e na negativa, "have" precisa de "do": "Do you have a car?", "I don't have time".
  • Não use "have" para idade nem para fome: é "I am thirty", "I am hungry".
