Good to know

  • とける is what the ice or the snow does; とかす is to melt something yourself: バター を とかす.
  • The same sound, written 解ける, is for a problem that gets solved or a knot that comes undone.
  • Ice doesn't decide to melt, so the potential, want, volitional, imperative and passive sentences show とける beside another verb.
