  1. Present and future

    エレベーター で さんがい に あがります。

    I'll go up to the third floor by elevator.

  2. Past

    くつ を ぬいで、 いえ に あがりました。

    I took off my shoes and went in.

  3. Te-form

    さむい でしょう。 どうぞ あがって ください。

    You must be cold. Please come in.

  4. Potential

    この かいだん から やね に あがれます。

    You can get up on the roof from these stairs.

  5. Want to

    とうきょう タワー の うえ に あがりたい です。

    I want to go up Tokyo Tower.

  6. Volitional

    やま の うえ まで あがろう。

    Let's go up to the top of the mountain.

Good to know

  • どうぞ あがって ください, "please come in", is said at the door of a Japanese home, where you step up from the entrance.
  • あがる is also for prices and temperatures going up: ねだん が あがりました.
