How to use つぶる

  1. Present and future

    ちち は おんがく を きく とき、 め を つぶります。

    My father closes his eyes when he listens to music.

  2. Past

    こわくて、 め を つぶった。

    I was scared and shut my eyes.

  3. Te-form

    め を つぶって、 ねがいごと を して。

    Close your eyes and make a wish.

  4. Potential

    こども の いたずら に は、 め を つぶれません。

    I can't turn a blind eye to the children's mischief.

  5. Want to

    つかれた。 すこし め を つぶりたい。

    I'm tired. I want to close my eyes for a bit.

  6. Volitional

    こんかい だけ は、 め を つぶろう。

    Just this once, I'll turn a blind eye.

  7. Conditional

    め を つぶれば、 うみ の おと が きこえる。

Good to know

  • め を つぶる is to close your eyes; め を とじる is the same, a little more formal. しめる is for doors.
  • め を つぶる is also to turn a blind eye.
