PART 1 · LESSON 1 OF 30 · 30 MINUTES Free
Welcome to Hangzhou
Owen lands in Hangzhou with a month, no Chinese, and an old teapot he mustn't break. At the station a young woman holds up his name, which he can't read, and Auntie Ma is waiting at her door. Say hello, to a friend and politely, ask a yes-or-no question and answer it with the verb, say who you are, say sorry, thank you, nice to meet you and welcome, and ask if someone is tired.

THE STORY
Owen sells tea in Seattle, and he has come to China to learn from a tea master, with one month, no Chinese, and a box he won't let go of. Inside it is an old clay teapot from his boss, Mrs. Lin, and her one instruction is not to break it. It's Thursday evening at the station in Hangzhou, and a young woman is holding up a sheet of paper with two Chinese characters on it. Then a taxi takes him to a lane near West Lake, where Auntie Ma is waiting at her door. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
