How to use いる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    この レストラン は よやく が いります か。

    Does this restaurant need a reservation?

  2. Past

    カナダ の ひと は ビザ が いりませんでした。

    Canadians didn't need a visa.

  3. Te-form

    ひっこし に おかね が いって、 たいへん です。

    Moving takes money, and it's hard.

  4. Potential

    ひとり で できます。 てつだい は いりません。

    I can do it alone. I don't need help.

  5. Want to

    おみやげ は いりません。 きもち だけ で じゅうぶん です。

    I don't need a souvenir. The thought alone is plenty.

  6. Volitional

    いる もの を いっしょ に かいましょう。

    Let's buy what we need together.

  7. Conditional

    なにか いれば、 いって ください ね。

    If you need anything, just say so.

  8. Commands and requests

    いる もの だけ もって きなさい。

    Bring only what you need.

  9. Passive and causative

    いらない もの まで かわされました。

Good to know

  • いる (to need) is godan: いります, いりません. いる (to be there) is ichidan: います, いません.
  • What you need takes が: パスポート が いります.
  • いる (to need) is used in the present, past, て and ば forms; nobody says いれる, いりたい or いろう, so those sentences show いる beside another verb.
