How to use つづく

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    この あつさ は、 らいしゅう まで つづきます。

    This heat will last until next week.

  2. Past

    かいぎ は よる の はちじ まで つづいた。

    The meeting went on until eight at night.

  3. Te-form

    あめ の ひ が いっしゅうかん つづいて いる。

    It's been raining for a week.

  4. Potential

    みち が つづいて いる かぎり、 あるけます。

    As long as the road goes on, I can walk.

  5. Want to

    いい てんき が つづく うち に、 せんたく したい。

    While the good weather lasts, I want to do the washing.

  6. Volitional

    はなし は つづく けど、 きょう は ここ まで に しよう。

    There's more to the story, but let's stop here today.

  7. Conditional

    ねつ が みっか つづいたら、 びょういん に いって。

    If the fever lasts three days, go to the hospital.

  9. Passive and causative

Good to know

  • つづく is for what goes on by itself: あめ が つづく, the rain keeps up; つづける is to keep something going.
  • Things go on by themselves, so where a form isn't used, the sentence shows つづく beside another verb.
