How to use です

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    ベン さん は カナダ じん です か。

    Are you Canadian, Ben?

  2. Past

    まえ の しごと は ぎんこういん でした。

    In my last job I was a bank clerk.

  3. Te-form

    ちち は いしゃ で、 はは は せんせい です。

    My father is a doctor and my mother is a teacher.

  4. Potential

    ここ は しずか で、 ゆっくり はなせます。

    It's quiet here, so we can talk in peace.

  5. Want to

    いつまでも げんき で いたい です。

    I want to stay healthy for ever.

  6. Volitional

    あした は たぶん あめ でしょう。

    It will probably rain tomorrow.

  7. Conditional

    にほんりょうり なら、 なんでも すき です。

    If it's Japanese food, I like everything.

  8. Commands and requests

Good to know

  • です is polite; between friends and family it is だ, and the negative is じゃ ありません or じゃ ない.
  • です has no potential, imperative or passive of its own, so those sentences show it beside another verb.
