How to use はなす

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    さとう さん は ゆっくり はなします。

    Mrs. Sato speaks slowly.

  2. Past

    ゆうべ、 はは と でんわ で はなしました。

    Last night I talked with my mother on the phone.

  3. Te-form

    もう すこし おおきな こえ で はなして ください。

    Please speak a little louder.

  4. Potential

    ベン さん は フランスご も はなせます か。

    Can you speak French too, Ben?

  5. Want to

    いつか にほんじん の よう に はなしたい です。

    One day I want to speak like a Japanese person.

  6. Volitional

    きょう は にほんご だけ で はなそう。

    Let's speak only Japanese today.

  7. Conditional

    ゆっくり はなせば、 わかります よ。

    If you speak slowly, I'll understand.

  8. Commands and requests

    じゅぎょう ちゅう は はなさないで ください。

    Please don't talk during the lesson.

Good to know

  • と はなす is to talk with someone, に はなす is to tell someone, and に ついて はなす is to talk about something.
