How to use いう

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    にほんご で なん と いいます か?

    How do you say it in Japanese?

  2. Past

    さとう さん は 「だいじょうぶ」 と いった。

    Mrs. Sato said "It's fine".

  3. Te-form

    もう いちど ゆっくり いって ください。

    Please say it again slowly.

  4. Potential

    ほんとう の こと は いえません でした。

    I couldn't tell the truth.

  5. Want to

    ベン さん に ひとこと いいたい こと が あります。

    There's something I want to say to you, Ben.

  6. Volitional

    みんな で せんせい に おれい を いおう。

    Let's all thank the teacher.

  7. Conditional

    はっきり いえば、 わかって くれます よ。

    If you say it clearly, they'll understand.

  8. Commands and requests

    いいたい こと が ある なら、 いいなさい。

    If you've got something to say, say it.

  9. Passive and causative

    ともだち に うそつき と いわれました。

    My friend called me a liar.

Good to know

  • と いう links what was said to いう: 「ありがとう」 と いいました. It also means "called": ゆい と いう ひと, "a person called Yui".
