How to use もつ

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    いつも かさ を もちます。

    I always carry an umbrella.

  2. Past

    ベン の にもつ を もった。

    I carried Ben's luggage.

  3. Te-form

    いま、 おかね を もって います か?

    Do you have money on you right now?

  4. Potential

    ひとり で ぜんぶ もてます か?

    Can you carry it all by yourself?

  5. Want to

    じぶん の みせ を もちたい です。

    I want to have my own shop.

  6. Volitional

    おもい でしょう。 ぼく が もとう。

    That must be heavy. Let me carry it.

  7. Conditional

    かさ を もてば、 あめ は ふりません。

    If you bring an umbrella, it won't rain.

Good to know

  • もって います is "I have it on me", and also "I own one"; もって いく and もって くる are to take and bring something.
