  5. Conditional

    Sin esa junta, el metal se dilataría y rompería el cristal.

    Without that joint, the metal would expand and break the glass.

  6. Present subjunctive

    La matrona espera a que dilate del todo.

    The midwife is waiting for her to be fully dilated.

  7. Past subjunctive

    Le pusieron el gotero para que dilatara más deprisa.

    They put her on the drip so she'd dilate faster.

Good to know

  • In the delivery room "dilatar" is said of the mother: ha dilatado cinco centímetros. "Dilatarse" is also to drag on: la reunión se dilató.
