How to use あわてる

  1. Present and future

    しけん の まえ は、 いつも あわてます。

    I always get flustered before an exam.

  2. Past

    さいふ が なくて、 あわてた。

    My wallet wasn't there and I panicked.

  3. Te-form

    あわてて でんしゃ に とびのりました。

    I rushed and jumped onto the train.

  4. Potential

    あわてて いて、 かぎ の ばしょ を おもいだせなかった。

    I was so flustered I couldn't remember where the key was.

  5. Want to

    あわてたくない から、 はやめ に でよう。

    I don't want to be rushed, so let's leave early.

  6. Volitional

    あわてないで、 ひとつずつ ゆっくり かたづけよう。

    Let's not panic and deal with it calmly, one thing at a time.

Good to know

  • あわてて is also "in a hurry": あわてて いえ を でた.
  • あわてないで is what you say to calm someone down.
  • You don't set out to panic, so the potential and volitional sentences show あわてる beside another verb.
