How to use いる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    いま、 うち に ねこ が にひき います。

    There are two cats at home now.

  2. Past

    きのう は いちにち じゅう いえ に いた。

    Yesterday I was at home all day.

  3. Te-form

    あれ、 だれ か いて ください。 ひとり は こわい。

    Hey, someone stay with me. I'm scared alone.

  4. Potential

    ここ に は ごじ まで いられます。

    I can stay here until five.

  5. Want to

    もう すこし ここ に いたい。

    I want to stay here a bit longer.

  6. Volitional

    あめ だ から、 うち に いよう。

    It's raining, so let's stay home.

  7. Conditional

    しちじ に うち に いれば、 でんわ します。

    If you're home at seven, I'll call.

  8. Commands and requests

    ここ に いなさい。 すぐ もどる から。

    Stay here. I'll be right back.

  9. Passive and causative

    ずっと ここ に いられる と、 こまります。

    If you keep staying here, it's a problem.
