How to use きる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    ふゆ は あつい コート を きます。

    In winter I wear a thick coat.

  2. Past

    まつり で ゆかた を きた。

    I wore a yukata at the festival.

  3. Te-form

    きょう は あたらしい シャツ を きて います。

    Today I'm wearing a new shirt.

  4. Potential

    きもの は ひとり で きられません。

    I can't put on a kimono by myself.

  5. Want to

    けっこんしき に は スーツ を きたい。

    I want to wear a suit to the wedding.

  6. Volitional

    さむい から、 セーター を きよう。

    It's cold, let's put on a sweater.

  7. Conditional

    この ジャケット を きれば、 さむく ない。

    If you wear this jacket, you won't be cold.

  8. Commands and requests

    コート を きなさい。 そと は さむい よ。

Good to know

  • きる is for clothes on the upper body or whole body; はく is for trousers and shoes; かぶる is for a hat.
