  2. Past

    けさ は さむくて、 みず が こおった。

    It was so cold this morning the water froze.

  3. Te-form

    みち が こおって いる から、 ゆっくり あるいて。

    The road is icy, so walk slowly.

  4. Potential

    こおって いて、 ドア が あけられません。

    It's frozen, I can't open the door.

  5. Want to

    こおる ような さむさ だ。 はやく かえりたい。

    It's freezing cold. I want to get home quickly.

Good to know

  • こおる is for what freezes by itself; こおらせる is to freeze something: にく を こおらせる.
  • Water freezes by itself, so where a form isn't used, the sentence shows こおる beside another verb.
