  1. Present and future

    ゆい さん は きもの が よく にあいます。

    Kimono really suits you, Yui.

  2. Past

    その ぼうし は あまり にあいませんでした。

    That hat didn't really suit me.

  3. Te-form

    ベン さん、 その めがね、 にあって います よ。

    Ben, those glasses suit you.

  4. Potential

    この いろ なら、 だれ に でも にあいます。

    This colour suits anyone.

  5. Want to

    はは に にあう スカーフ を かいたい です。

    I want to buy a scarf that suits my mother.

  6. Volitional

    にあう か どうか、 きて みよう。

    Let's try it on and see if it suits.

  7. Conditional

    にあえば、 この ジャケット を かいます。

    If it suits me, I'll buy this jacket.

  8. Commands and requests

    にあって いる から、 それ に しなさい。

    It suits you, so go with that one.

Good to know

  • What suits you takes が, and the person takes に: ベン さん に は あお が にあいます.
  • にあう is not something you decide, so the potential, want, volitional, imperative and passive sentences show it beside another verb.
