How to use たずねる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    らいしゅう きょうと の おば を たずねます。

    Next week I'm visiting my aunt in Kyoto.

  2. Past

    えき で けいさつ の ひと に みち を たずねた。

    I asked a police officer the way at the station.

  3. Te-form

    こまったら、 えきいん に たずねて ください。

    If you're stuck, please ask a station attendant.

  4. Potential

    やすみ の ひ なら、 せんせい を たずねられます。

    On a day off, I can visit my teacher.

  5. Want to

    いつか せんせい の ふるさと を たずねたい。

    Someday I want to visit my teacher's hometown.

  6. Volitional

    こんど いっしょ に おじいちゃん を たずねよう。

    Let's go and visit Grandpa together sometime.

Good to know

  • Visiting is written 訪ねる and asking 尋ねる, both said たずねる.
  • For asking, たずねる is a little polite and formal; between friends, きく is the everyday word.
