How to use まいる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    まもなく でんしゃ が まいります。

    The train is arriving shortly.

  2. Past

    きのう、 おたく に まいりました が、 おるす でした。

    I came to your house yesterday, but you were out.

  3. Te-form

    この あつさ に は、 まいって います。

    This heat is really getting to me.

  4. Potential

    あいにく、 その ひ は まいれません。

    Unfortunately, I can't come that day.

  5. Want to

    ぜひ また まいりたい と おもって おります。

    I very much hope to come again.

  6. Volitional

    では、 そろそろ まいりましょう か。

    Well then, shall we get going?

  7. Conditional

    なんじ に まいれば、 よろしい でしょう か。

Good to know

  • まいる is いく and くる said humbly of yourself: すぐ まいります; on the platform, でんしゃ が まいります.
  • まいった, "I give up", "you got me", and あつさ に まいる, to be worn down by the heat, are the same verb.
  • Nobody is made to まいる, so the imperative and passive sentences show it beside another verb.
