  2. Past

    とちゅう で くるま が とまりました。

    The car stopped on the way.

  3. Te-form

    エスカレーター が とまって います。

    The escalator has stopped.

  4. Potential

    ここ で は とまれません。

    We can't stop here.

  5. Want to

    つかれた から、 ちょっと とまりたい。

    I'm tired, I want to stop for a bit.

  6. Volitional

    あの じどうはんばいき の まえ で とまろう。

    Let's stop in front of that vending machine.

Good to know

  • とまる is what a thing does (the bus stops); とめる is what you do to it (you stop the car).
  • Written 泊まる, とまる is also to stay the night: ホテル に とまります.
