How to use own

  1. Present

    My parents own a small bakery downtown.

    Meus pais têm uma padaria pequena no centro.

  2. Past

    We owned a boat for a few years, never again.

    A gente teve um barco uns anos, nunca mais.

  3. Future

    One day I will own a house with a big kitchen.

    Um dia eu vou ter uma casa com uma cozinha grande.

  4. Present continuous

    He is owning up to it, at least.

    Pelo menos ele está assumindo o erro.

  5. Present perfect

    They have owned this farm for four generations.

Good to know

  • "Own" é ter como dono; "I have a car" e "I own a car" dizem o mesmo, mas "own" deixa claro que é seu.
  • "On my own" é sozinho, sem ajuda: "I did it on my own".
  • "Own up to" é assumir um erro: "he owned up to it".
