How to use はえる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    この へや は、 すぐ カビ が はえます。

    This room gets mould straight away.

  2. Past

    あかちゃん に はじめて は が はえた。

    The baby's first tooth has come through.

  3. Te-form

    チーズ に カビ が はえて いる よ。

    There's mould growing on the cheese.

  4. Potential

    カビ が はえた もち は、 もう たべられません。

    Rice cake with mould on it can't be eaten any more.

  5. Want to

    カビ が はえる まえ に、 たべて しまいたい。

    I want to eat it up before mould grows on it.

  6. Volitional

    くさ が はえる まえ に、 にわ を きれい に しよう。

    Before the grass comes up, let's tidy the garden.

  7. Conditional

    カビ が はえたら、 すてて ください ね。

    If mould grows on it, please throw it out.

Good to know

  • はえる is for what comes up by itself: hair, teeth, grass, mould. You never はえる something.
  • So where a form isn't used, the sentence shows はえる beside another verb.
