How to use とって おく

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    ケーキ は、 ベン の ぶん を とって おきます。

    I'll keep a slice of cake for Ben.

  2. Past

    まどぎわ の せき を とって おいた よ。

    I saved us a window seat.

  3. Te-form

    この はこ、 すてないで とって おいて ね。

    Don't throw this box out, keep it.

  4. Potential

    ざんねん だ けど、 せき は とって おけない。

    Sorry, but I can't save you a seat.

  5. Want to

    この てがみ は いっしょう とって おきたい。

    I want to keep this letter all my life.

  6. Volitional

    のこり は あした の ため に とって おこう。

    Let's keep the rest for tomorrow.

  7. Conditional

    レシート を とって おけば、 へんぴん できます。

  • て おく after a verb means doing it now for later; とって おく is to put something aside: せき を とって おく.
