  1. Present and future

    そうた は しょっちゅう さら を わります。

    Sota is forever breaking plates.

  2. Past

    けさ、 おきにいり の コップ を わった。

    This morning I broke my favourite cup.

  3. Te-form

    たまご を ふたつ わって、 まぜて ください。

    Break two eggs and mix them, please.

  4. Potential

    この ガラス は、 かたくて われません。

    This glass is hard and can't be broken.

  5. Want to

    この くるみ を わりたい けど、 どうぐ が ない。

    I want to crack these walnuts, but I have no tool.

  6. Volitional

    うみ で スイカ を わろう よ。

    Let's split a watermelon at the beach.

  7. Conditional

    さら を わったら、 すぐ いって ね。

    If you break a plate, tell me right away.

Good to know

  • わる is to break something that shatters: a plate, a glass, an egg. われる is for what breaks by itself.
  • わる is also to divide: ろく わる に は さん.
