Past

मैंने इतने मेहमानों की उम्मीद नहीं की.

I didn't expect so many guests.
Imperfect

पहले मैं सबसे बहुत उम्मीद करता था.

I used to expect a lot from everyone.
Future

मैं अगली बार बेहतर खाने की उम्मीद करूँगी.

Next time I'll hope for better food.
Subjunctive

हम उम्मीद करें कि कल बारिश न हो.

Let's hope it doesn't rain tomorrow.
Requests and commands

अच्छे की उम्मीद करो, लेकिन तैयारी पूरी रखो.

Hope for the best, but be fully prepared.

What you hope for takes की: मुझे अच्छे नतीजे की उम्मीद है; उम्मीद is feminine, so the past is की.
