How to use いたす

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    おにもつ は わたし が おもち いたします。

    I'll carry your luggage.

  2. Past

    せんじつ は しつれい いたしました。

    I'm sorry about the other day.

  3. Te-form

    ただいま、 かくにん いたして おります。

    I'm checking on it right now.

  4. Potential

    もうしわけ ありません が、 へんこう は いたしかねます。

    I'm sorry, but we're unable to make changes.

  5. Want to

    ぜひ、 おてつだい いたしたい と おもいます。

    I'd very much like to help.

  6. Volitional

    それ は わたし が いたしましょう。

    Let me do that.

  7. Conditional

    いちど おやくそく いたしたら、 かならず まもります。

    Once I've made a promise, I always keep it.

Good to know

  • いたす is する said humbly of yourself: わたし が いたします; what the other person does is なさる.
  • どう いたしまして, "you're welcome", is this verb.
  • To say you can't, humbly, use いたしかねます rather than いたせません, so the potential sentence shows that; the imperative and passive sentences show いたす beside another verb.
