How to use とぶ

    この とり は、 ふゆ に みなみ へ とびます。

    This bird flies south in winter.

  2. Past

    ぼうし が かぜ で とんだ。

    My hat flew off in the wind.

  3. Te-form

    ひこうき が ひくく とんで いる。

    A plane is flying low.

  4. Potential

    ペンギン は とり だ けど、 とべません。

    Penguins are birds, but they can't fly.

  5. Want to

    とり の よう に そら を とびたい。

    I want to fly in the sky like a bird.

  6. Volitional

    おおきい みずたまり だ。 とぼう。

    That's a big puddle. Let's jump it.

  7. Conditional

    とうきょう から とべば、 おおさか まで いちじかん です。

    If you fly from Tokyo, it's an hour to Osaka.

  8. Commands and requests

    あぶない から、 ベッド の うえ で とばないで。

Good to know

  • とぶ is both to fly and to jump; in kanji they are 飛ぶ and 跳ぶ, but they sound the same.
  • とばす is to make something fly: かみひこうき を とばす.
