How to use haver

  1. Present

    Há uma farmácia aberta perto da estação.

    There's a pharmacy open near the station.

  2. Past

    Houve um acidente na ponte hoje cedo.

    There was an accident on the bridge this morning.

  3. Future

    Vai haver festa na rua no sábado.

    There's going to be a street party on Saturday.

  4. Imperfect

    Havia muita gente na praia ontem.

    There were a lot of people at the beach yesterday.

  5. Conditional

    Sem o show, não haveria tanto trânsito.

    Without the concert, there wouldn't be so much traffic.

  6. Present subjunctive

Good to know

  • In speech "tem" does the work of "há": "tem muita gente" is what people say.
  • "Há dois anos" is two years ago; "haja paciência!" is "give me strength!".
