PART 2 · LESSON 16 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
It Was Supposed to Be Ready Yesterday
Three weeks into a two-week renovation, the kitchen is still bare concrete. Say "it was supposed to be ready" and "it should have been seen before", complain politely to the builder, hear his excuses, from rotten pipes to Carnival, and get a promise, without fail. The next morning, the tiles arrive, in the wrong colour.

THE STORY
Thursday the fifteenth of March, in the flat in Botafogo. The kitchen has no floor, no sink and no tiles, just bare concrete, a pile of old pipes and a radio playing samba. Seu Valdir, the builder, a big man with plaster dust in his moustache, is drinking a coffee from a plastic cup. He started on the twenty-sixth of February, and said two weeks. The next morning, the tiles arrive. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
