PART 1 · LESSON 7 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
It Has to Be Translated
On Thursday morning Daniel and Bia go to the registry office to start the paperwork for the wedding, and find out they have come too early. Talk about what has to be done and what has already been done, "it has to be translated", "it has been signed", "they will be published", and learn the words for certificates, witnesses, stamps, fees and the banns.

THE STORY
Thursday, December ninth, at the registry office in Botafogo, where every marriage in Brazil begins with paperwork. There is a ticket machine, forty plastic chairs and a clock that is ten minutes slow. Daniel has a folder with every document he owns. Their number is called after an hour and a quarter. Afterwards, on the pavement, Bia phones Carla, one of their two witnesses. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
