How to use かかる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    えき まで あるいて じゅっぷん かかります。

    It takes ten minutes on foot to the station.

  2. Past

    ひっこし に にじゅうまんえん かかった。

    The move cost two hundred thousand yen.

  3. Te-form

    まだ じかん が かかって います か?

    Is it still taking time?

  4. Potential

    そんな に じかん は かけられません。

    We can't spend that much time on it.

  5. Want to

    おかね は あまり かかりたくない。

    I'd rather it didn't cost much.

  6. Volitional

    じかん が かかろう と、 さいご まで やります。

    However long it takes, I'll see it through.

  7. Conditional

    いちじかん も かかれば、 まにあいません。

    If it takes a whole hour, we won't make it.

  8. Commands and requests

    どうか、 これ いじょう おかね が かからないで。

    Please, don't let this cost any more money.

  9. Passive and causative

    むすこ に あまり おかね を かからせたくない です。

    I don't want my son to run up a lot of expenses.

Good to know

  • かかる is for time and money that something takes; かける is what you do to a phone or a lock: でんわ を かけます.
