  1. Present and future

    まいにち メモ を とります。

    I take notes every day.

  2. Past

    いちばん まえ の せき を とった。

    I got a seat at the very front.

  3. Te-form

    すみません、 その しお を とって ください。

    Excuse me, could you pass me the salt?

  4. Potential

    らいしゅう、 やすみ が とれます か?

    Can you get time off next week?

  5. Want to

    うんてん めんきょ を とりたい です。

    I want to get a driving licence.

  6. Volitional

    はやく いって、 いい せき を とろう。

    Let's go early and get good seats.

  7. Conditional

    よやく を とれば、 またない で すみます。

  • とる takes a thing, a day off, a reservation or a qualification; とる "to take a photo" is written 撮る.
