How to use удержать

  1. Past

    Из премии удержали налог, как обычно.

    Tax was withheld from the bonus, as usual.

  2. Future

    Я его не удержу, он слишком тяжёлый.

    I won't be able to hold him up, he's too heavy.

  3. Conditional

    Я бы удержала слёзы, но не смогла.

    I'd have held back the tears, but I couldn't.

  4. Imperative

    Удержи собаку, здесь много детей.

    Hold the dog back, there are lots of children here.

Good to know

  • Удержать налог is to withhold tax from pay. Удержать is also to hold on to: я не удержал чашку; удержаться, to keep oneself from.
