Valentine's Day
The day before Valentine's Day, Ms. Aoki gives Ben chocolate, and he learns that in Japan, women give chocolate to men, and there are two very different kinds. The next morning, a parcel comes from Kyoto. Say "probably" (deshō) and "maybe" (kamo shiremasen), explain a custom, describe a thing with a verb before it, and promise something back on White Day.

Friday February thirteenth, 2026, back in Tokyo. Valentine's Day is tomorrow, a Saturday, and the school is closed at the weekend. When Ben gets to the staff room, there's a small box on his desk, with a ribbon. Ms. Aoki is smiling, and Mr. Kimura has one too. The next morning, a parcel comes from Kyoto.
