How to use できる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    ベン さん は スキー が できます か。

    Can you ski, Ben?

  2. Past

    きょう、 やっと にほんじん の ともだち が できました。

    Today I finally made a Japanese friend.

  3. Te-form

    よやく が できて、 あんしん しました。

    I managed to book, and felt relieved.

  4. Potential

    この カード で しはらい が できます。

    You can pay with this card.

  5. Want to

    りょうり が もっと できる よう に なりたい です。

    I want to get better at cooking.

  6. Volitional

    できる こと から はじめましょう。

    Let's start with what we can do.

  7. Conditional

    できれば、 まどがわ の せき が いい です。

    If possible, I'd like a window seat.

  8. Commands and requests

    できない とき は、 できない と いいなさい。

    When you can't, say you can't.

  9. Passive and causative

Good to know

  • できる takes が: にほんご が できます.
  • できる is itself the "can" of する, so it has no potential of its own; the potential, want, volitional, imperative and passive sentences show it beside another verb.
  • ともだち が できる is to make a friend, and ごはん が できました means the meal is ready.
