How to use き に なる

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    しけん の けっか が き に なります。

    I'm anxious about the exam results.

  2. Past

    となり の へや の おと が き に なった。

    The noise from the next room bothered me.

  3. Te-form

    あの ふたり の こと が ずっと き に なって いる。

    Those two have been on my mind the whole time.

  4. Potential

    き に なる こと は なんでも きけます よ。

    You can ask about anything you're curious about.

  5. Want to

    き に なる みせ に いって みたい。

    I want to try that restaurant I've been curious about.

  6. Volitional

    き に なる なら、 きいて みよう。

    If it bothers you, let's just ask.

  7. Conditional

    き に なったら、 ちょくせつ きいて みれば?

    If it's on your mind, why not ask directly?

  8. Commands and requests

  • What's on your mind takes が: けっか が き に なる; き に なる ひと is someone you can't stop thinking about.
  • き に なる is what happens to you; き に する is what you do about it.
  • Being on your mind is not something you decide, so the potential, want, volitional, imperative and passive sentences show き に なる beside another verb.
