How to use き に する

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    わたし は ねだん を あまり き に しません。

    I don't worry much about the price.

  2. Past

    ちこく した こと を いちにち じゅう き に した。

    I fretted all day about having been late.

  3. Te-form

    あの ひと は たいじゅう を すごく き に して いる。

    That person worries about their weight a lot.

  4. Potential

    いそがしくて、 こまかい こと まで き に できない。

    I'm too busy to worry about the small stuff.

  5. Want to

    ひと の いけん を き に したくない。

    I don't want to care what people think.

  6. Volitional

    ちいさな こと は き に しない ように しよう。

    Let's try not to worry about little things.

  7. Conditional

    き に すれば する ほど、 ねむれなく なる。

    The more you worry, the less you can sleep.

  8. Commands and requests

    そんな こと、 き に しないで ください。

    Please don't worry about that.

  9. Passive and causative

Good to know

  • What you worry about takes を: ひと の め を き に する.
  • き に しないで, "don't worry about it", is the everyday answer to an apology.
  • き に しよう is hardly said, so the volitional sentence shows き に する beside another verb.
