How to use ある

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    この ちかく に ぎんこう は あります か。

    Is there a bank near here?

  2. Past

    きょう は じゅぎょう が ありませんでした。

    There was no class today.

  3. Te-form

    じかん が あって、 さんぽ しました。

    I had time, so I took a walk.

  4. Potential

    そんな こと は ありえません。

    That can't be.

  5. Want to

    いい はは で ありたい と おもいます。

    I want to be a good mother.

  6. Volitional

    なに が あろう と、 かぞく を まもります。

    Whatever happens, I'll protect my family.

  7. Conditional

    おかね が あったら、 くるま を かいたい です。

    If I had money, I'd like to buy a car.

  8. Commands and requests

    そこ に ある もの に さわらないで ください。

    Please don't touch the things there.

  9. Passive and causative

    れいぞうこ に ある もの を ぜんぶ たべさせました。

    I let them eat everything in the fridge.

Good to know

  • いる is for people and animals, ある for things: ねこ が います, ほん が あります.
  • The plain negative is ない, not あらない: じかん が ない.
  • ある has no imperative or passive of its own, so those sentences show it beside another verb.
