How to use きく

One sentence for each tense, the way people say it.

  1. Present and future

    あさ は ラジオ を ききます。

    In the morning I listen to the radio.

  2. Past

    せんせい に しゅくだい の こと を ききました。

    I asked the teacher about the homework.

  3. Te-form

    よく きいて ください。 いちど しか いいません。

    Listen carefully. I'll only say it once.

  4. Potential

    はずかしくて、 なまえ を きけませんでした。

    I was too shy to ask her name.

  5. Want to

    ベン さん の いけん を ききたい です。

    I'd like to hear your opinion, Ben.

  6. Volitional

    わからない から、 えきいん に きこう。

    We don't know, let's ask the station staff.

  7. Conditional

    この おんがく を きけば、 おちつきます。

    If I listen to this music, I calm down.

  8. Commands and requests

    ひと の はなし を さいご まで ききなさい。

    Listen to people until they've finished.

  9. Passive and causative

    えき で がいこくじん に みち を きかれました。

    At the station a foreigner asked me the way.
