Things Come in Threes
Back in Triana after Christmas in Oaxaca, Sarah pays her debt on the day of the Three Kings - and bites into the bean again. Then Manolo brings out a ticket for the Child's lottery. In this first Fluency lesson, learn how Spaniards talk about luck - things come in threes, third time lucky, luck is luck, a jinx, bad paw, cross your fingers - and how they tease someone who has none.

LA HISTORIA
It's Saturday, January 6th, 2029, the day of the Three Kings, eleven in the morning, in Encarna's patio in Triana. After Christmas in Oaxaca, everyone from Seville but Professor Ortega flew home together, on January 3rd. A year ago, Sarah got the bean in the King's cake, and the rule is clear - whoever gets the bean pays for next year's. So this morning Sarah went to the best cake shop in Triana and came back with the biggest King's cake they had. Manolo and Julian are waiting with knives. At twelve, Manolo takes out a ticket for the Child's draw, the second Christmas lottery. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
