Thank You Means No More

Monday the twenty-sixth of May, twenty thirty-one, Porto Alegre, nine degrees at eight in the morning. Part Two begins in the South. Daniel and Larissa, who has never been cold in her life, land for the office's first big client, a man in his sixties who meets them at the airport himself, with a thermos under his arm. Before business, the South's hot bitter tea goes round the table from one gourd, and the one word that stops it coming back is thank you, which Daniel says after his first sip, politely, and loses his turn for the morning. Say "I've never been cold in my life", "before business, the tea", "in the tea, thank you means I don't want any more", "whoever says thank you leaves the circle" and "I said thank you too early", and hear the South speak, with its own you.
