On the platform at Ramses station the loudspeaker announces the Alexandria train in Standard Arabic, at exactly eight from the fifth platform, and Leo and Karim say the same thing the everyday way: the train leaves at eight, platform five, get on, everybody.

THE STORY

Platform five at Ramses station, a Saturday morning in May, ten grown-ups and a baby in a pram. Leo and Karim speak plainly to each other; the loudspeaker reads Standard Arabic.
