Two Families

On Sunday, Ben takes his parents to Kyoto on the bullet train, and the two families meet at Yui's parents' house. Ben interprets in both directions. Introduce your parents, introduce yourself formally as someone's father or mother, thank guests for coming so far, invite them in, give and receive a gift, say someone is a fine person, ask someone to take care of your son or daughter, and survive being the interpreter.

L’HISTOIRE

Sunday, April fifth. Ben and his parents take the bullet train to Kyoto, and Yui meets them at the station. At her parents' house in the north of Kyoto, the two fathers bow at the door, both a little too long. There's tea in the living room, then a lunch Yui's mother has cooked all morning. Neither family speaks the other's language, so Ben is in the middle, interpreting everything. The narrator tells you what Ben's parents say. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
