L’HISTOIRE
Saturday, two o'clock, an hour before check-in. Ben is alone at the front desk when the first guest comes in early, with two suitcases. Ms. Lin is from Taiwan. She reads every kanji in the building, the booking book, the signs, the notice about the bath, but she's shy about speaking. Ben is the other way round. He checks her in with every polite word Kenta taught him, and sends her off for tempura with a map. Kenta watches from the kitchen door, impressed, and has an offer to make. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
