His Own Rod

Sunday the eighth of October, twenty twenty-eight, five in the morning. Yui's father knocks at a quarter to five, Ben comes down with the rod from his birthday, his own at last, and the car takes them twenty minutes into the hills north of Kyoto. Yui's father phones, five o'clock and don't oversleep, and a nurse puts Ben to bed at nine. Sunday, a quarter to five, the knock. Five o'clock, the car, and twenty minutes to the river in the hills north of Kyoto, with Ben's own rod and a cooler box. An hour of silence, then a bite.
