Little Kisses

While Sarah waits for the school's answer, Julian takes her to a small mezcal distillery near Santiago Matatlan, run by an old friend of his family, who tells stories about Julian as a boy and asks whether her parents know about him. A HISTÓRIA

It's Saturday, the thirteenth of June. Sarah still hasn't heard from the school of midwifery, so Julian has taken her on the bus to Santiago Matatlan, a village in the valley where nearly every family makes mezcal. Don Fermin's distillery is an open shed on a hillside of agave, with a pit in the ground for an oven, and a horse turning a great stone wheel. He has made mezcal for sixty years, and has known Julian since he was a boy. Before they leave, Sarah buys a bottle for her father, and on the bus home, Julian is very quiet. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
