Saturday, the twenty-second of July, market day in the town at the bottom of the valley. Grandma Nena's own cheese needs weeks to ripen, and after her week of rest there's none ready, so for once she has sent Daniel and Bia down to buy cheese and coffee. In the square, under a fig tree, a man in a straw hat is playing a ten-stringed country guitar, the kind called a viola in Minas, and a small crowd is listening. When he stops, Bia walks straight up to him. An hour later, at the car, Bia finds out what Daniel has bought, and what he hasn't.
