PART 3 · LESSON 21 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
The Family Arrives
Saturday the sixth of November, Kyoto station. Ben's parents and his older sister Emma arrive for the wedding, after thirteen hours in the air and a soaking at the wrong exit. Emma has a secret, a year of Japanese on an app. Use the passive for things that happen to you (ame ni furareta, akachan ni nakareta), the causative passive (suwarasareta), and the causative (nakaseta) with the families. Talk about jet lag and a long flight, older and younger sisters, and welcome guests to Kyoto.

THE STORY
Saturday, the sixth of November, two and a half weeks before the wedding. Ben's parents were last in Japan a year and a half ago. His older sister Emma, a nurse like Yui, has never been. After thirteen hours in a middle seat, a change of planes and a walk round Kyoto station in the rain, she opens her mouth, and Yui's jaw drops. Sota gets her age wrong, which delights her. At the hotel Yui's parents are waiting, and Yui's father has a plan for five the next morning. That night Emma can't sleep, and phones her little brother. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
