THE STORY
A year and a half ago, the two families met for the first time, with Ben interpreting everything and kneeling until his legs went numb. Tonight it's a private room at the restaurant on the river, with chairs, ten days before the wedding, and they're almost family. Mr. Yamamoto stands to make the toast. Ben's father wants to say something too. Then Emma, who has been practising in secret, asks if she may say one thing. The fathers' fishing trip turns out to have needed no words at all, and the bill turns out to need a great many. Afterwards, by the river, Ben finds out his big sister has grown up. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
