PART 2 · LESSON 12 OF 30 · 40 MINUTES
How Much Longer?
On her first shift on call, at four in the morning, Sarah delivers her first baby in Spain, and the mother speaks pure Andalusian, swallowing half her letters. Learn to understand the speech of Seville - the dropped S, the dropped D, the R for L - and guide a woman through a birth in Spain's Spanish - breathe with me, push, nearly there, here he is. Then meet the grandmother, the father and a superstition that midwives share everywhere.

THE STORY
It's Thursday, October 7th, and Sarah's first shift on call, twenty-four hours on the delivery ward. By four in the morning, in room three, a young woman called Macarena, like her neighbourhood, has been in labour for ten hours with her first baby. Her mother can't bear to watch, and waits in the corridor with a rosary. Rosario has decided that Sarah will catch this baby, and stands right beside her. Then the grandmother comes in, and in the corridor Rosario has something to say. This is the conversation you'll be able to say by the end of the lesson.
